Culver City high school's own Academy of Visual and Performing Arts (AVPA) student, sophomore Brennan Elliott, has been awarded first place in the Congressional Art Competition.

Brennan's artwork will be displayed at the nation's capital in Washington, D.C. for a year. Congresswoman Karen Bass will be flying to Washington with Brennan for the celebration.

AVPA Art Students honored by Congresswoman Karen Bass

AVPA art students recently attended the Congressional Art exhibition at the Mayme A. Clayton Library and Museum, hosted by Congresswoman Bass. Nearly 300 art pieces were submitted by 21 art teachers from 18 schools represented by the 37th District in California. All of the student artists submitted their best piece to be displayed. Several other students from AVPA were recognized with honorable mentions, including Camila Fernandez and Siena Nellis.

Brennan expressed his thoughts about his first-place win, saying, "It is an honor to have my painting chosen as the winner of the Congressional Art Competition. I am very excited to visit Washington, D.C. to see my painting hang in The Capitol Building. I am fortunate to be part of AVPA and to have Kristine Hatanaka as my teacher because without her I would not have had this opportunity."
