Culver City Fire Engine 1 – Tesla 0

NTSB Sending Investigators

February 2, 2018

The only thing worse than crashing your self-driving car into a wall or another car is crashing into a police car or fire engine. Well it happened Monday morning to Culver City Engine 42.

The engine was struck by a Tesla flying along at 65 mph. The fire crew was working a motorcycle down call on the 405 Freeway Monday morning.

There were "amazingly" no injuries however the firefighters on the scene commented that it "scared the heck out of them."

The driver reports the Tesla S was on autopilot and he was not paying attention. Amazingly there were no injuries! Culver City Firefighter reminded everyone to "Please stay alert while driving!"

Meanwhile the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) tweeted on Tuesday it was sending two investigators to examine the crash of a Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) vehicle apparently traveling in semi-autonomous mode and a fire truck in California.

The federal safety agency stated the "field investigation" would examine both driver and vehicle factors in Monday's accident.

In response to requests for comment, a Tesla spokesperson didn't address the specific accident but they pointed out that Autopilot requires the attention of the driver: "Autopilot is intended for use only with a fully attentive driver."

Most recently Engine 42 was dispatched to the Belair fire as part of a strike team from several westside fire departments.
