Centennial Kickoff Brings Out The Crowds

September 29, 2016

More than 1200 local residents marched in the Centennial Parade last Saturday to the delight of onlookers. Police cruisers, motorcycles and fire trucks were mixed in with scouts, schools, floats, clubs and local organizations, dignitaries and the Culver City High marching band.

The parade began near Veteran’s Park and ended just past city hall. Culver City resident and businessman Mike Cohen announced the groups as they passed by the reviewing platform in front of city hall.

The parade was followed by the opening ceremonies where Cohen resumed his MC duties followed by speakers including Mayor Jim Clarke, Former Mayor and President of the Centennial Committee Paul Jacobs, City Historian Julie Lugo Cerra and Mayors from Culver City’s Sister City.

From there residents enjoyed the “Block Party of The Century” sponsored by the Culver City Downtown Business Association. Tickets were sold for the “Taste of Culver City” where participating restaurants offer a taste of the food from their various restaurants.

A VIP buffet luncheon was sponsored by and held at the famous Culver Hotel. The hotel’s owner Maya Mallick and General Manager Seth Horowitz put on a fabulous buffet that would rival any buffet I have been to. The staff was very accommodating and everyone raved about the food.

The hotel also provided rooms for the visiting dignitaries from our sister cities Kaizuka, Japan; Uruapan, Mexico; Iksan, South Korea; and Lethbridge, Canada.

The centennial gala will be held this Saturday night at Sony Studios with an estimated 600 guests in attendance.
