The U.S. Women’s National Team, which last July won the FIFA Women’s World Cup, has been selected 2015 Sportswomen of the Year by the Los Angeles Sports Council.

The championship squad, with a lineup that included a significant Southern California presence, will be honored at the 11th Annual LA Sports Awards, to be held on Thursday, February 25 at The Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The Stars and Stripes captured the Cup by defeating Japan in the final, 5-2, played in Vancouver, Canada.

Among those team members with ties to Southern California are Shannon Boxx (Redondo Beach), Whitney Engen (Rolling Hills Estates), Lauren Holiday (UCLA), Sydney Leroux (UCLA), Alex Morgan (Diamond Bar), Christen Press (Palos Verdes Estates) and Amy Rodriguez (Lake Forest/USC).

In addition, U.S. head coach Jill Ellis was the long-time head coach at UCLA, running the women’s soccer program for 12 years.

The LA Sports Awards are presented annually by the Sports Council to celebrate the greatest moments of the year in sports in the Los Angeles/Orange County area.
