Culver Teacher Darla Pulliam Honored

Darla Pulliam, a teacher at the CCUSD Office of Child Development, has been named Los Angeles Universal Preschool Teacher of the Year. She will be honored at an event on May 27.

"These are the kind of teachers that children will remember for the rest of their lives," says Celia C. Ayala, CEO of LAUP, the 10-year-old nonprofit organization that coaches, funds and advocates for quality preschool in Los Angeles County.

"This critical need for exceptional teachers is why LAUP is proud to present its winners of the Eighth Annual Preschool Teacher of the Year Award.

Each year LAUP crowns at least one exceptional preschool teacher representing each of Los Angeles County's five Supervisorial Districts. The countywide preschool teacher recognition is a tradition acknowledging the creativity and hard work of those who teach children at the most fundamental time in their lives."

On May 1 Sony Pictures Entertainment celebrated the 25th anniversary of its Global Volunteer Day, an annual event in which the studio's employees dedicate their time to a project that benefits the local community. This year, in partnership with national education organization, City Year, SPE employees completed a campus beautification project at La Ballona Elementary School in Culver City.

SPE employees, along with parents from La Ballona, painted three murals and create elements for a learning garden. The murals commemorate the school's 150-year anniversary; depict its dedication to bi-lingual learning; and showcase its commitment to healthy eating.

"We are so pleased to be continuing the studio's legacy of volunteerism and community involvement," said Janice Pober, Senior Vice President, Global Corp Social Responsibility, Sony Pictures Entertainment. "For our 25th annual Global Volunteer Day we are working with wonderful partners and are hopeful that the students will enjoy the murals and learning garden as much as I know we enjoy working on them."

The day of service is part of Culver City Unified School District's larger revitalization project at La Ballona Elementary School.
