I was wondering, what does one do when it rains cats and dogs? Since we are in a drought I didn’t spend much time dwelling on this subject. Maria, AKA “the wild gypsy lady,” came over, and at random local newspapers were reviewed.
Interestingly, on March 14, 2003 Marta Zaragoza was appointed to the Baldwin Hills Conservancy by Governor Davis. On June 7, 2010 Chris Sellers was sworn in as Fire Chief by Mayor Christopher Armenta. On December 13, 2008 Mayor Scott Malsin and I presented Millie Davidson with a Culver City Certificate of Recognition on her 100th birthday. On August 5, 2003 Mayor Alan Corlin spent the night at the Congressman Julian Dixon County Library reading bedtime stories to a roomful of little ones and their mothers.
Although women earn approximately 85% compared to their male counterparts, the latest list of billionaires featured a record 172 ladies, up 25% from 2013.
Once again may I please whisper in your ear? No use telling the NSA people everything. For years I’ve been telling everyone how creative government has become in picking our pockets. In 2013 Georgia, Oregon, Washington and Vermont were considering a tax – nothing new there – but it’s on bicyclists!!! Chicago was talking about a $25 fee which, as we all know, will eventually triple.
Soon-to-be Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells doesn’t have to organize a posse of two-wheeler pedal pushers to ride up and down Culver Blvd. in protest. Our state isn’t advocating this now, but wait . . .
Speaking of $25, in the nation’s Capitol their city council mandated that citizens carrying up to one ounce of marijuana will be fined $25.
Did everyone read, last summer, the national analysis by Consumer Reports on hospital safety for surgeries that gave Marina del Rey Hospital a score of 29 out of 100? The safest hospital in the South Bay and Harbor area was Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Torrance with a rating of 55 out of 100.
Many of us fondly remember Beverly Violin from her devotion to the Friends of the Library, the Culver City Democratic Club and the Senior Citizens Center. She was married to Efram for 50 years when she passed away on May 5, 2002 after a long battle against cancer.

Does it really seem like it’s been two years that the expo light rail line has been in operation? April 28, 2012 was the big day and if all goes well next year will see Phase II completed, all the way to Santa Monica.
Please don’t feel sad or depressed that allegedly State Senator Ron Calderon took kickbacks while in office. The Senator will take a leave until the end of the legislative session in August 2014 to prepare his defense. He will still get his $95,291 salary.
If you love to read and have time on your hands I highly recommend “Operation Storm” by John Geoghegan. Imagine the idea of Admiral Yamamoto, to build super duper-sized subs 400 feet long with watertight hangars capable of launching bombers carrying 1,800 pound bombs and staying at sea for up to four months. The first target would have been the Panama Canal.
From the German file: A German court ruled recently that a prospective Berlin police recruit’s breast implants cannot legally be used as grounds to keep her off the force. The chief felt she would have problems wearing a protective vest or riot gear which, if worn, would put so much pressure on her chest that there was a risk of fibrosis. The judge and the doctors said it would be okay.
Can our sister city organization make our next city be one in China?
Don’t look for me in August!!! On August 15th in Jonesboro, Arkansas, for all us country and western music lovers, it’s the Johnny Cash Music Festival. Scheduled to perform are Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire and Bobby Bare. I remember when I was stationed overseas so many great entertainers came through on the USO tours. My personal favorite was Minnie Pearl.

Today it’s docked in San Pedro and it makes three summer voyages to Catalina. If you would like to volunteer with the engine room, radios, painting, etc. we need your help. Call (562) 708-1550.
And now in Westminster, California a federal jury awarded $3.5 million to three police officers who were passed over for promotions and assigned to the mall because they are Latino.
From the file labeled “Unconfirmed Rumors,” Staples on Jefferson near the San Diego Freeway will close within the next 12 months and the Keystone pipeline will be approved with some environmentally necessary changes.
