Kaizuka and Culver City - a Long Running Exchange

February 13, 2014

On Sunday, February 16 Christopher Patrick King and Kirsten Bell will join Japanese marathoners from our sister city, Kaizuka, Japan, other runners from other cities in Osaka Prefecture, and guest runners from their sister cities, in the 21st Senshu International Marathon.

Culver City Sister City Committee has sent runners since its inception to commemorate the opening of the Kansai Airport near Kaizuka. All runners CCSCC have selected have completed marathons in under four hours and ten minutes.

In March Culver City Sister City Committee will once again host marathon runners from Kaizuka, Mazako Okazaki and Hidekazu Matoba, to run in the Los Angeles Marathon. Previously Kaizuka sent runners to participate in the second oldest marathon in the United States, Western Hemisphere Marathon in Culver City, until it ended after 45 years.

This exchange in addition to the summer middle school student exchanges for more than 20 years has kept the cultural ties alive between these two cities for almost 49 years.

We have sister city connections with Lethbridge, Canada and Iksan, South Korea. Culver City Sister City Committee will be celebrating its 50th anniversary of its first sister city, Uruapan, Mexico on February 24th before the city council meeting.

The Los Angeles Consul General Carlos M. Sada will be in attendance. The celebration begins after 5 pm and includes entertainment and refreshments.

There will be some comments made by the dignitaries in attendance. Following will be certificate swapping during the Culver City Council Meeting. The public is invited.

Honoring the past – running towards the future.
