BREAKING NEWS - Rally Tonight at Council to Save the Ice Rink

January 23, 2014

A coalition of local skaters and community members know as "Save The Ice Rink' have called for a rally at tonight's city council meeting.

The details are:

WHEN: Monday January 27th

5:00 PM before Culver City Council Meeting

WHERE: 9770 Culver Blvd.

Culver City, CA 90232

WHY: The Culver Ice Arena has been a popular community tenant for over 52 years, and now the non-local land owners have decided, as of February 15, 2014, to almost double the rent, and ironically during the Winter Olympic Games which will result in the ice rink closing its doors forever. This closure will put 50 people out of work and may end many careers, some of whom have worked at the ice rink for over 40 years.

The Culver Ice Arena is an iconic landmark on the West Side of Los Angeles, where childhood dreams are created. Olympic champion figure skaters and professional hockey players are made here. Young children learn to figure skate, play hockey and have memorable birthday parties. Preteens and teenagers spend fun, safe, social time with their peers, late into the evening. Culver Ice Arena is a special place where parents take their children for their first moments on the ice, creating life-long memories. This family tradition is passed down through several generations, and now this important, meaningful legacy is being threatened with closure.

We are seeking the media's immediate help in alerting the generations of loyal customers and supporters, with the hope that we can overcome this nearly insurmountable hurdle. We are actively seeking the support of Mayor Cooper and the City Council, to assist us in every way possible.

PLEASE JOIN US IN THIS ENDEAVOR AND HELP US SAVE THE CULVER ICE AREA!!!

About Save the Ice Rink

This iconic landmark ice arena, on the West Side of Los Angeles County, has served generations with family entertainment, learn to skate, learn to play hockey, figure skating, ice hockey, broom ball and speed skating. Formerly the practice home of the Los Angeles Kings having greats of the NHL from Wayne Gretzky to Rogie Vachon to Luc Robitaille to visiting NHL teams skating here before games at the Forum.

This community rink has serviced the area honorably in a family environment for 52 years. The rink itself makes a modest profit and has had in good standing -- a 49 year lease and a 3 year lease, plus extensions with land owners who are based in Fresno, CA. In a time when other landmarks in Los Angeles County have closed, such as Hollywood Park and World of Wheels roller rink, we are determined to save the last remaining full size ice rink in all of Los Angeles, so that future generations can enjoy ice skating in the local environment of Culver City.

That rink is garbage.

Bill writes:

Culver City Council start the historic designation process now. Vote tonight to have the Ice Rink designated historic and nominate it for State and Federal Historic designation -- National Register of Historic Places!

Must see this article: http://frozenroyalty.net/2014/01/27/profit-was-not-the-primary-goal-for-la-kings-now-dashed-plans-for-culver-city-ice-arena/ Things do not appear to add up. Why would City not make sure (w/tax and other benefits) to make the renovation by AEG and future City revenue happen? Not a CC resident but if were would want to know and would like council to respond and explain.
