Betty Boyd, the wife of former longtime USC men's basketball coach Bob Boyd, died on Monday, in Palm Desert. She was 84.

Services are pending. She is survived by her husband, Bob, and sons, Jim, Bill and John, as well as 10 grandchildren.

The Boyds were married when Bob was on the basketball team at USC, where he lettered for three years (1950-52).

After coaching high school for five years (at El Segundo and Alhambra Highs) and then for six years at Santa Ana Junior College, Bob Boyd spent two seasons (1964-65) as head coach at Seattle University. He next embarked on a 13-year career (1967-79) guiding USC, going 216-131 overall and reaching the post-season four times.

His 1971 Trojan team, which went 24-2, is regarded among USC's best. His wins over UCLA in 1969 and 1970 were the Bruins' fi rst losses in Pauley Pavilion.

After USC, he became the head coach at Mississippi State (1982-86), Riverside Community College (1989) and Chapman (1990-92), and then was an assistant at LSU and Utah State.
