City Scholars Honors Culver Executive Director

December 5, 2013

Recognizing that few, if any, events recognize the tireless commitment of non-profit executive directors who sacrifice to help low-income youth achieve against the odds, City Scholars® Foundation partnered with U.S. Bank to honor the graduates of the City Scholars® Leadership Academy at its gala "Celebrate City Scholars®" Luncheon.

Abby Adams, executive director of Determined to Succeed, an after-school college prep program for low-income youth in Culver City and Palms, was among this year's graduates honored on November 20 at the Los Angeles Music Center.

As the only tuition-free leadership development program for non-profit executive directors serving low-income youth throughout the Greater Los Angeles region, the City Scholars® Leadership Academy offers more than 60 hours of classroom training, executive coaching, business and peer mentoring and networking with grantmakers and community leaders.

"Our students have benefitted by my growth as a leader through the City Scholars® Leadership Academy. I now feel equipped to ensure the sustainability and viability of the program that we provide for them," said Adams.

In her graduation remarks Adams also noted that the training and coaching she received through the City Scholars® Leadership Academy has helped Determined to Succeed roll out a growth plan, allowing them to serve twice the number of students in 2014.

Determined to Succeed provides academic and enrichment resources and support for 110 low-income youth in Culver City and the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles each year.

Each year, City Scholars® Foundation awards Academy Fellowships to highly motivated, non-profit Executive Directors who are selected through a rigorous application process. Applications are accepted from July 1 through September 30 for the ten-month fellowship program beginning the following January. For more information, visit http://www.cityscholars.org.
