Mothers' Group Opens In Downtown Culver

October 31, 2013

Every Friday afternoon at the Goda Yoga Studio in downtown Culver City Kazia Cumbler and Robyn Murgio throw a party. There's an assortment of foods, chilled wine, fresh-brewed coffee, gift bags and lots toys?

This is the setting for Mama Need a Drink, a weekly mother's group for Moms with babies 12 months and younger that focuses on creating an atmosphere for new moms to meet, relax and share what's on their mind.

More than a standard mother's group, Mama Needs a Drink features bi-monthly guest speakers that focus on health and wellness of not just the baby, but the mother as well.

Speakers include specialists on sleep training, baby sign language, life-work balance, diet and nutrition, and stress management. Most popular among these topics is 'Ask the Doctor', where moms are free to ask questions of Dr. Meredith Brower, an OB/GYN and Fertility Specialist at UCLA Medical Center.

"We're fond of saying 'This isn't your mother's 'Mother's Group'," explains Cumbler, herself a DONA-certified Postpartum Doula. "The idea is to create a fun, inviting environment where Moms can really connect with one another and begin pieceing together a support network."

Part of creating that environment is the weekly food menu. Wine and coffee are staples, but each week's offerings also revolve around a new, thoughtfully-crafted culinary theme.

"We put a lot of time and effort into keeping the food choices fun and creative," reveals Murgio, "Sometimes that means making homemade fruit and vegetable smoothies and other times it means ordering an assortment of sushi from K-Zo It's just part of keeping the experience fresh and interesting."

Mama Needs a Drink is held every Friday afternoon from 2:45-4:00 in Downtown Culver City. Drop-ins are welcome and first visits are complimentary. More information can be found on their website
