Melvin Lee Van Horn passed away peacefully at his home on October 7th in Culver City, surrounded by family.

Melvin, fondly known as Mel was born on October 27th, 1931 in Lexington, Nebraska and moved to Los Angeles in 1942 and resided in Venice until moving to Culver City in 1980.

Mel graduated from Venice High and upon graduation served our country in the branch of the Navy as a Radiotelegraph Operator communicating Morse code during the Korean War.

Mel was employed for 40 years as an Engineer for Hughes Aircraft. Following his retirement, Mel attended DeVry University and earned his certificate in Computer Technology.

Mel was a proud member of the Culver City Community Emergency Response Team, an avid bowler, winning numerous trophies, mastered use of the Amateur Ham Radio, earned his Pilot’s License, had a love and fascination for airplanes, boats and enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Mel is remembered as a quiet observer who communicated with his legendary blue eyes and gentle smile and always has something witty to say. Mel is survived by his wife, Angela Imam-Van Horn, his sister, Evelyn Arlene Van Horn and his three children, Nadira Tracy, Karim Roger and Soroya Crystal Imam.

Services will be held at noon on Saturday, October 19th at Gates Kingsley & Gates, 4220 Sepulveda Blvd, Culver City.
