Valentina Grom Dies at 92

Valentina Grom

Valentina Grom passed away July 27.

She was born on July 5, 1922 in a small farming village near Minsk in Belarus. After World War II the family lived in a displaced person's camp in Bavaria and was sponsored by a Colorado church group to immigrate to the United States. The family had a work contract for one year in Pilgrim Pines which is located in the foothills above Yucaipa and they moved to Culver City in 1951.

Valentina joined TRW Semiconductors in 1958 and rose to the position of production manager for computer engineering before she retired in 1984. She was active in the Sisterhood of her Russian Orthodox Church, Protection of the Holy Virgin in Hollywood for many years contributing time and effort to their charities.

In her spare time Valentina enjoyed cooking, gardening and afternoons at Venice and Washington Beaches. Many people remember her as a long time voter registrar and for her participation in the Culver City Senior Citizens Center.


Valentina was preceded in death by her parents Stephan and Alexandra Drozd of Belarus, son and daughter-in-law Willam and Theresa Warren of Reno, NV. She is survived by her daughter Vera Chandler-Heaston and son-in-law Tim Heaston; grandson Trafton Chandler of Carmel, grand-daughter Jen Warren of Reno, sister Zoia Jelounovitch-Orloff of MarVista and several nieces and nephews in Belarus.

Private services were held in Los Angeles by the family followed by burial in Monterey,

Thank you for writing this article on my grandmother. Babooshka as my mom would call her I called her grandma was the sweetest most caring role model and friend too me. I often think of her and all the blessings she gave and wished for me. I love her dearly and am thankful for having her and culver city in my life growing up!
