Council Mulls Public Safety During Construction

Concerned that massive traffic jams that have brought traffic in downtown Culver City to a standstill at rush hour, the City Council will discuss the ongoing and upcoming construction projects on Monday night.

In addition to the existing Metro construction which will extend the Expo Line, both the Legado and Platform projects are scheduled to begin construction shortly.

The city’s email expresses concerns for both traffic and public safety access, stating "In addition to the existing Metro construction, both the Legado and Platform projects will be underway shortly. This has raised some concerns regarding substantial impacts to traffic and the potential for impeding access to that area for emergency services."

Council will consider a municipal code amendment to allow extended construction hours under certain circumstances in the interests of public health, safety and general welfare by decreasing the overall duration of construction and mitigating related impacts.

"In addition to the existing Metro construction, both the Legado and Platform projects will be underway shortly," the city said in an email update. "This has raised some concerns regarding substantial impacts to traffic and the potential for impeding access to that area for emergency services."

While the Expo Line bridge is being constructed over Venice Blvd. motorists have suffered with lane closures and complete closures of Venice in different directions. These detours have forced additional traffic on both Washington and Culver Blvds. creating a traffic bottleneck in both downtown and East Culver City.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the council chambers located at9770 Culver Boulevard.
