Japanese Kites: A Vanishing Art

Wednesday, August 28 | 7 pm

Brown Auditorium | Free; tickets required and available at the ticket office one hour before the start of the event.

Collector David M. Kahn will speak about hand-painted kites, a unique genre of Mingei, which is little known in the U.S. and produced by a rapidly shrinking number of traditional craftsmen in Japan. Kahn will focus on works that are included in an exhibition at Santa Fe’s Museum of International Folk Art through March 23, 2014, with approximately 250 hand-painted kites dating primarily to the Showa period, along with related woodblock patterns, books, and other materials.

Jazz at LACMA

Featuring the art of jazz as practiced by leading Southern California artists, these free concerts are presented at the BP Grand Entrance every Friday evenings from April to November. Friday Night Jazz is made possible by K-JAZZ 88.1.

Luther Hughes & Cannonball/Coltrane Project

Friday, August 16 | 6 pm

Initially formed as an homage to the 1959 landmark album, The Cannonball Adderley Quintet in Chicago, the Cannonball/Coltrane Project continues to pay tribute to its two namesake jazz giants with arrangements and original compositions related to or inspired by Cannonball and Coltrane. The group has released a number of critically acclaimed recordings that are played on leading jazz stations across the country.

Cross Hart Jazz Experience

Friday, August 23 | 6 pm

Led by bassist/composer Ryan Cross and drummer Lorca Hart, the Cross Hart Jazz Experience takes a fresh approach to jazz standards with high-energy arrangements. The group’s acclaimed self-titled debut album has received airplay nationally, and the group has performed across Southern California in jazz clubs and festivals including the Playboy Jazz Festival.

Donatelli

Friday, August 30 | 6 pm

Joined by pianist and producer Geoffrey Keezer, Grammy nominated vocalist Denise Donatelli returns to LACMA following the release of her Grammy Award nominated recording Soul Shadows. Her 2010 release When Lights are Low received two nominations, one for Best Jazz Vocal Album and another for Best Arrangement Accompanying a Vocalist for Keezer’s arrangement of "Don't Explain.” Donatelli’s busy touring career has taken her across the country and around the world at major clubs and festivals.

Latin Sounds

Relax in Hancock Park as world-renowned artists play the hottest sounds from Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Mexico, Cuba, and Los Angeles. The concerts are every Saturday 5–7 pm, May through September at the Dorothy Collins Brown Amphitheater at LACMA, in Hancock Park north of the museum. Free; no tickets or reservations required.

Chuchito Valdés Afro-Cuban Ensemble

Saturday, August 10 | 5 pm

Chuchito Valdés, following in the footsteps of his famed father Chucho Valdés and grandfather Bebo Valdés, continues the legacy of great piano players from Cuba. Valdés and his band reinvigorated age old Cuban musical forms, the venerable cha-cha-cha and mambo standards revitalized by the muscular virtuosity of a younger generation.

Dori Caymmi

Saturday, August 17 | 5 pm

Internationally acclaimed Dori Caymmi is a two-time Grammy Award winner (Best Latin Song and Best Latin Samba Recording). The Brazilian singer, guitarist, songwriter, arranger, and producer has worked with Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, and Gilberto Gil, as well as Dionne Warwick, Toots Thielemans, Elaine Elias, Ricardo Silveira, and Edu Lobo. He has toured the world in concert venues ranging from Carengie Hall to major international jazz festivals.

Justo Almario Afro-Colombian Ensemble

A native of Colombia, saxophonist and composer, Justo Almario has been fusing Latin, Afro-Cuban, South American, funk and jazz genres for over thirty-five years, working with such legendary artists as Mongo Santamaria, Freddie Hubbard, Cal Tjader, and Jennifer Lopez. Almario's newest ensemble combines jazz elements with the Afro-Colombian rhythms such as cumbión, porro, chandé, fandango, and, best known, cumbia.

Johnny Polanco

Saturday, August 31 | 5 pm

LACMA’s 2013 Latin Sounds series ends with one of the West Coast’s hottest salsa bands, Johnny Polanco y Su Conjunto Amistad. As one of the most sought-after band leaders in the U.S., he has gained the distinction for making the type of contagious Latin music appreciated by salsa dancers worldwide. Mr. Polanco has been performing concerts the world over for nearly thirty-five years and has worked with such artists as Cachao, Tito Puente, Jr., Charlie Zaa, Ray De La Paz, Tito Nieves and many others.

Sundays Live

Sundays Live is an ongoing series and includes free classical music concerts presented by LACMA in cooperation with Friends of Sundays Live. These concerts take place in the Bing Theater and feature mid-career professionals and student virtuosos taking center stage.

Please note: Sundays Live concerts can be heard live via streaming audio at lacma.org, or by delayed broadcast the following Wednesday at noon on KCSN, 88.5 FM.

Perris Hill Park in San Bernardino is the second site for the LACMA9 Art + Film Lab. Area residents are invited to participate in free film workshops, an oral history project, outdoor film screenings, plus a free day at LACMA. Presented by LACMA in collaboration with the City of San Bernardino Parks and Recreation and the Arts Council.

The Dardenne brothers have created an unflinching portrait of one of the most resilient characters in cinema.

Create a video document of a person, group of people, activity, or place that you find colorful or interesting. How do you capture their essence or mood? What is it about them that you want to share with the world?

The visual image is a huge part of film language. How do you get a moving or still image to capture what you’re feeling? Try some techniques, borrowed from film professionals, to help you create more expressive compositions. Learn about shot size, depth of field, composition, quality of light, and camera movement. Your home movies and travelogues may never look the same.

Instant Film

Saturday, August 24 | 12 pm

Ready, set, film! Take turns playing director, cinematographer, and crew/actor in this instant filmmaking workshop. Your small group will shoot footage, interpreting a random theme suggested by workshop participants. Learn in-camera editing and work under creative constraints. It’s all about getting it “in the can.” Wince or laugh as we screen everyone’s group work inside the Lab.
