Honoring Our Soldiers – Walk For Warriors

On Memorial Day Monday New Directions and the West LA Chamber of Commerce will host the 3rd annual Walk for Warriors 5K Run/Walk.

Walk for Warriors will be located on the Veterans Affairs Campus in the Brentwood community, and will be a day filled with family fun and entertainment for all ages. All proceeds will benefit military veterans who have struggled to make the transition from service.

This year's Walk for Warriors will be hosted by Fox 11 news anchor and local philanthropist Christine Devine.

Devine is the recipient of 16 Emmy’s, including the Academy’s prestigious Governor’s Award, and one award specifically for a story on injured and disfigured veterans.

Devine commented, "I'm thrilled to be participating in the Walk for Warriors. With the unique set of challenges facing veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, this event will bring attention to the urgent need for supporting our vets as they transition home."

The start and finish line is adjacent to the New Directions Veteran Opportunity Center (V.A. Building 116). The New Directions Veterans Choir, a group of formerly homeless veterans, will sing the National Anthem. The group has performed on America's Got Talent and has recently wrapped up its first national tour.

New Directions President and CEO Gregory C. Scott added, “Whether you run or walk, this event is fun. And it’s important because you are joining in community with others to honor all those who have sacrificed for our freedoms, and those who are making sacrifices right now.

“ At the same time, your support helps fund efforts to end veteran homelessness and educate our community about the value of hiring veterans.”

Captain Overton Spence of the U. S. Air Force will lead the morning warm ups. Captain Spence served at the United States Air Force Academy for three years as the strength and conditioning coach for the basketball, cross country, tennis and swimming teams.

The Air Force Academy serves as the Air Force's Center of Excellence for Combatives. The program trains over one thousand cadets a year and deploys in train the trainer efforts throughout the Air Force.

Walk for Warriors will feature music along the course and an Expo booth fair with food and local businesses. The first 1,000 to cross the finish line will receive a Nike drawstring goodie bag filled with products from Beverly Hills hairdresser to the stars, Nick Chavez.
