After a 4-2 loss to Lawndale last week veteran Culver City High softball coach John Sargent asked his players in an after game huddle, how many of them thought they could have won this game?

Every girl on the team raised her hand.

Having a lot of new players, freshmen and sophomores on the team is one of the challenges Culver’s softball team has this season.

In a post game interview with The Observer’s George Laase Sargent addressed the youthful inexperience.

“This game is a good example of what having heart means,” he said. “The only way we can finish games like these, when we are tired, is by stepping it up.

“Playing varsity softball is a big girls’ game. We must continue to play the game until the end—the last pitch, the last out. We cannot help the other team by making mistakes at the end of the game.

“We have a young team this year. I am proud of their effort and I can see they are improving with every game.”

Assistant coach Duane Briggs said:

“I thought we played a pretty good game. Two late errors made the difference. If we can hit the ball better and advance the runners, we are going to win these games.

“ I thought Breauna (Dunlap) did an outstanding job of pitching. Lisa (Kamba) did a good job behind the plate. She popped the home run and kept us in the game. Overall, I was pleased with their effort.”

Assistant coach Rick Hudson said “there were too many strikeouts (11) on our team. Our pitcher (Breauna Dunlap) did a great job. It just comes down to our hitting. We can beat this team. We just need to be more aggressive at the plate.”
