Golden State Water Company Promotes 'Fix A Leak Week'

Golden State Water Company is helping customers save water and money by partnering with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to promote its fifth annual 'Fix a Leak Week,' which runs from March 18-24.

"EPA estimates that California loses more than 120 billion gallons of water as a result of leaky pipes in households every year," said Jared Blumenfeld, EPA's Regional Administrator for the Pacific Southwest. "EPA appreciates the work companies like Golden State are doing to encourage the use and installation of water-efficient products that save energy and preserve Southern California's precious water supply."

The campaign, part of the US EPA WaterSense® program, is designed to raise waste awareness by reminding people to check their household fixtures and irrigation systems for hidden leaks. Although a leaky faucet or garden hose may seem like a small problem, a minor leak can add up to serious waste. According to the EPA, the average household's leaks account for, on average, 10,000 gallons of wasted water each year; or enough to fill a backyard swimming pool.

"I encourage our customers to participate in 'Fix a Leak Week' and visit their local Golden State Water Company office to pick-up water-use efficiency information and materials to help them perform their own detective work to stop household water leaks," said Central District Manager, Paul Rowley.

Throughout the week, while supplies last, Golden State's local offices across the state will be distributing free leak dye tablets to help customers identify if they have leaks in their toilets. Golden State has also posted additional information on its website to help customers find leaks.

The takeaway for Golden State customers: even small preventive efforts can pay important dividends in keeping their costs lower and conserving our most precious natural resource.

The amount of water leaked from U.S. homes could exceed more than one trillion gallons per year. That's equivalent to the annual water use of Los Angeles, Chicago, and Miami combined.

10 percent of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more per day.
