Heart of Darkness

“And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” John 1:5.

“Africa was the farthest point of navigation and culminating point of my experience. It threw a kind of light on everything about me.”Joseph Conrad- Heart of Darkness

Joseph Conrad’s celebrated novel Heart of Darkness is the story of Charlie Marlow, a sailor with a taste for adventure who uses his family ties to secure a position for himself as captain of a steamboat heading up the Congo River. His mission is to recover a cache of ivory from a renegade trader by the name of Kurtz. Along the way, Marlow discovers the futility, ineptitude and folly of Colonialism, and learns deep truths about the nature of light and the heart of darkness.

“It’s one of the best pieces of writing in the English language-- and it was written by a Polish man who learned English from a Frenchman,” says actor and adaptor, Brian T. Finney (Ovation Award Winning actor for Underneath the Lintel). “A century has passed since Conrad penned Heart of Darkness,” he continues, “but the story is still so very relevant. The complexities of human existence in the Congo, ‘the horror’ that Marlow experiences in the play, continues there today, through the legacy of Colonialism.”

The Ivy Substation is air-conditioned and wheelchair accessible. For reservations and information, call The Box Office at 310-838-GANG (310-838-4264) or visit www.theactorsgang.com
