Affordable Housing Roundtable Discussion Planned

Assemblymember Holly Mitchell and the City Council of Culver City invite the public to attend a roundtable discussion on the future of creating affordable housing in this new landscape on Friday, February 8 between 9 am to noon at the Mike Balkman Council Chambers, 9770 Culver Blvd.

Leaders from the affordable housing development, lending, and academic communities will discuss topics ranging from creating permanent sources of funding to using local zoning to create affordable housing.

The Honorable Holly Mitchell from the California State Assembly will serve as one of the Roundtable Panelists. Ms. Kathe Head, a Managing Principal from Keyser Marston and Associates, will serve as the discussion facilitator. Leaders from the affordable housing development, lending, and academic communities will discuss topics ranging from reinstating the LMIFH to the using local zoning to create affordable housing.

The City of Culver City during the first three years of the Comprehensive Housing Strategy in 2008 was poised to create 54 affordable housing units by 2013 and projected to create 264 affordable housing units by 2015. Culver City’s Tilden Terrace commenced construction last year and will redevelop an entire block with a place-making, mixed use affordable housing development.

These residences represent the first affordable family housing units created in 10 years in Culver City. All of these units were funded significantly by the Redevelopment Agency’s Low and Moderate Income Housing Fund (LMIFH).

In 2011 efforts to construct new affordable housing units came to a halt, and nearly 20% of the 54 units and all other future affordable housing units may never be built. It has been one year since the devastating loss of the Low and Moderate Income Housing Fund through the elimination of Redevelopment Agencies. Culver City lost $8 million annually, resulting in a significant blow to the creation of affordable housing in Culver City. Other cities throughout the state have felt similar impacts.

Members of the public who wish to attend must RSVP by February 5 to Tevis Barnes at (310) 253-5782 or tevis.barnes@culvercity.org.

Free accessible parking at City Hall (off Culver Boulevard and Duquesne Avenue).
