Culver Gets First League Win in A Forfeit

January 24, 2013

The way the Culver City High boy’s basketball team has been going in a 5-14 season any victory was most welcomed.

The Centaurs, who had lost their first three Ocean League games, won for the first time last Friday night when visiting Hawthorne forfeited in a game scheduled for the Culver gym.

Hawthorne was involved in a brawl with Morningside in its previous game. Four players were ejected and drew an automatic one-game suspension, leaving them unable to play against Culver City.

Hawthorne principal Mark Newell then added three players to the suspended list.

Since Hawthorne’s league record became 0-4 Culver City escaped last place.

Coach Adam Eskridge, who replaced Jon Chapman this season, says he’s learning what it takes to win.

“The difference between winning and losing is razor-thin,” he said.

“I’m seeing that one possession can change the outcome of a game. We have an inexperienced team and our guys are learning that.”

Chris Edwards and J.R. Montgomery are the Centaurs’ leading scorers.

The Culver girls team is rolling along with a 15-5 record, including 4-0 in the Ocean League.
