January 17, 2013

Culver City Police Department responded to a call at a home in the 3900 block of Van Buren Place Saturday night. The resident, a woman, told officers her son was under the influence of drugs and was destroying furniture in the home. The suspect refused to cooperate with the officers and had to be forcibly removed from the premises.

The man allegedly kicked at the Culver City Police Officers as they handcuffed him, but then stopped fighting the officers after he was handcuffed. Officers summoned paramedics. The man was transported to a nearby hospital and was pronounced dead.

As is the procedure for the Culver City Police Department, Sheriff's Homicide Bureau detectives were called to investigate the death.

A spokesperson for the Sheriff's department said they found miscellaneous narcotics paraphernalia and what was believed to be methamphetamine. According to the man's mother, her son had a history of drug abuse.

The Coroner’s office has scheduled an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
