That was some basketball competition between Culver City and West Torrance Highs last week.

The Culver boys played at home and despite an inspiring fourth quarter comeback lost a 51-50 decision. In defeat the Centaurs held the visitors to four points in the fourth quarter.

The girls’ teams played at West Torrance and Culver City won, 50-47. The Culver girls, fresh from a tournament in Arizona, improved their record to 10-4.

Ocean League play began Wednesday night and defending champion Santa Monica is again the boys’ favorite.

Coach James Hecht, in his 19^th year, has one of his deepest teams and has called upon his reserves quite a bit this season as Santa Monica has won 11 games and lost four Forward Jordan Matthews has signed a letter of intent with California.

Inglewood, which finished second last season and then won the CIF Division 2A championship, picked up three transfers but has struggled to a 7-5 non-league record thus far.

Culver City will play at Santa Monica Friday night.

The Culver girls, coached by Julian Anderson, began league play Wednesday night at Morningside and will be at Santa Monica Friday night. The Centaurs’ home league opener will be against Inglewood on January 16 at 6 pm.
