Sister City Committee Schedules 50th Anniversary Events

November 28, 2012

The Culver City Sister City Committee invites the public to attend a series of events in December and January celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Fifty years ago the City Council of Culver City formed the Culver City Sister City Committee (CCSCC), joining the national Sister City movement begun by President Dwight Eisenhower, recognizing citizen diplomacy as key to the development and maintenance of peace in our ever complicated world.

CCSCC 50th Anniversary activities begin at 5 p.m. on Monday, December 10 with the public unveiling of the Sister City signpost at the corner of Duquesne and Culver. The ceremonies will continue at a reception open to the public in the Dan Patacchia Room at City Hall, followed by the presentation of a proclamation during the City Council meeting in Council Chambers.

A full day of anniversary activities is scheduled for Saturday, January 12, starting with the unveiling of a Sister City commemorative plaque on the corner of Duquesne and Culver at 10 a.m.

Between 1 pm and 3 family activities will be available at Veterans Auditorium, where the four rooms named for the Sister Cities will feature snacks, cultural exhibits and entertainment representing the different countries. There is no charge for this event, and people of all ages are welcome to attend. The celebration will culminate that night with a dinner at the Courtyard by Marriott, which will honor our foreign visitors, community leaders and people who have been instrumental in helping CCSCC throughout the years. The evening will include music, a cultural program and multi-media presentation. Cost for the dinner is $25 for adults and $10 for people age 17 and under, and prepaid reservations are required. For further details on the dinner or to make reservations, please contact Alice at (310) 642-7604 or alice5651@gmail.com. For general information, or if you wish to become involved in the planning of the celebration, please contact the 50th Anniversary Chair Barbara at ccsccbarbarahonig@gmail.com.
