AVPA Art Student Wins First Place in Art Competition

Kate Johannesen, 12th Grade, from The Academy of Visual and Performing Arts at Culver City High, has been awarded First Place for her painting titled, “Leo Carrillo State Beach” by The LegiSchool Project’s 2012 Visual Arts: California State Park Art Contest.

The competition is sponsored by The California State University, Sacramento’s Center for California Studies. Students from across the state were asked to create an original artwork inspired by California state parks and express why they are important to California.

Kate describes her artwork, "My piece, titled "Leo Carrillo State Beach", depicts a serene ocean view from a rock ledge on the beach. For this piece, I used conte pencil to sketch the lines first, then watercolor and gouache over it, and finally white pastel on top for the sea foam and rock highlights. My painting is based on a photo I took when my family and I went to Leo Carrillo State Beach this past summer. It is one of our favorite places to go for outdoor fun."

Two other AVPA Visual Art students, Ariana Pacino, 9th Grade and Stefana Gloginic, 11th Grade were also selected as runner-ups for the competition. All three AVPA artists will have their work prominently featured at the State Capitol in Sacramento from April 2 ~ 12, 2013.

Ariana Pacino says proudly, “My painting was inspired by both the beauty of California state parks and the logo that represents them. I am grateful to have been chosen as a runner-up in this contest and I am excited to see my artwork displayed in Sacramento!”

Stefana Gloginic says of her artwork, “The art piece I created was intended to bring self awareness to the issues of pollution. California state parks need to be preserved to protect the animals living there. I was really happy to have won a place in this contest. It’s rewarding to be recognized for my work. It encourages me to continue in making my artwork.”
