In the television Series “Dragnet” The tag lines read, “Only the names have changed to protect the innocent.” Quite the opposite was true in Tuesday’s California Primary Election, while the names were the same all the district numbers changed due to reapportionment.

The 47^th State Assembly District has now become the 54^th where incumbent Holly Mitchell will square off against Republican Keith Mc Cowan in the November general election. Ed Nicoletti, who had previously been an unsuccessful candidate for the Los Angeles City Council, came in a distant third.

Congresswoman Karen Bass, whose 33^rd Congressional District morphed in the new 37^th, was reelected with no opposition from any party. The district is rated the “safest” congressional district in the country for democrats.

Second District Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas was also reelected without opposition.

Turnout for the election in Los Angeles was a dismal 17.2%

Due to population shift, district realignments called reapportionment are required every ten years. The recent reapportionment was done by a citizens committee to assure fairness and transparency in the process.
