November 12, 2009

Art lovers will enjoy this weekend’s show at the Teale Street Sculpture Studio, 11847 Teale Street in Culver City. Hours are from 2 p.m. to 5 both Saturday and Sunday. For more information call the Studio at (310) 307-2697.

Here’s a great membership incentive -- This fall, all new and renewing Culver City Education Foundation members’ names were entered into a raffle. Five winners were randomly chosen and received Trader Joe's or Raintree Cleaners gift certificates. Congratulations to Joyce Wagner (Lin Howe), Nomi Roth (Middle School), Luis Martinez (El Rincon), Susan Collins (El Marino), and Carmen Uribe (Farragut). During the fall membership drive membership donations increased by over $4,000 from the previous year. This will assist CCEF to fund more teacher and school grants!

Lotsa b’day wishes this week, including Cathy Lugo (it’s late, but sincere!), Shirley Miyamoto, Pat Clapp, Virgie Eskridge, Darlene Kiyan, Alida Brundo, Albert Vera, Mark Mangum, Mardi Gillette, Pete Hyatt, Debbie Jacobowitz, Betty Davis, Roy Mathison, Don Gripp, Don Thorne, Tim Lowe, Joy Roederer, Jeff Williams, Maria Serrano, Robert Peacock, Shonda O’Neal, John Walker, Amy Hudge, Jeffrey Lindsay, Evan Mwangi, Jerry Reed, Natalie Kling, Stephen Hutchison, Lauren Sobaje, Leonard Monfredo, Carol Franklin, Danny Peebles, Mary Downes, Eleanor Clark, Alex Barraza, Di Krall, Ginny Williams, Diana Moncur, Brenda Fowler, Linda Firth, Kermit Burman II, Sheldon Feldman, Herb Lundberg, Kathy McConkey-Murphy, Richard Martin, Steve Silverman, Richard Tomassacci, Eileen Lewis, Steve Stephens, Howard Paris, Angela Ryan, Yosief Tesfamariam, Konstance Valdez, Consuelo Socorro Santiago, Gary Mitchell, Roland Jordan, Takehiko Suzuki, and Mark McLaughlin.

The arts are alive and well in Culver City, and here’s a nice example: Next Thursday, November 19 from 6 p.m. to 8 the Koplan Del Rio Art Gallery (6031 Washington Blvd. in the popular Arts District) will host a fun-filled evening of wine, hors d’oeuvres, artwork, and live music – all to benefit the Culver City Chamber Orchestra. The cost is just $20 per person, and reservations are a must: call (310) 397-2490.

November is “Family Caregivers Month,” and for the first time the Culver City Council has issued a proclamation to acknowledge the important role caregivers play. This is designed as a time to thank, support, educate and empower family caregivers, defined as family, friends, partners and neighbors – those who work unselfishly to help those disabled and/or aging community members who need assistance. For information and support (yes, caregivers need support too!) contact the Los Angeles Caregiver Resource Center, (800) 540-4442 or visit www.caregiver.org.

No Brainer Time: Culver City Exchange Club member, insurance agent and duoMom Michelle (Maher) Ford just got the results of her ultrasound: no twins this time – just one!

Ouch! The annual pre-USC/UCLA game lunch held jointly by the Culver City Rotary and Exchange Clubs does have some rivalry attached, if Rotary’s Reciprocator bulletin is any indication: Rotarian Chris King reminded everyone that the UCLA/USC lunch will be 11/18 and “…we will have two special guests. Come that day to be surprised. Additionally, we will be auctioning off items to help UCLA raise enough money to buy some better athletes.”

Holiday Yard Sale –of-the-Week : The focus is on Grace Lutheran Church this week, whose sale kicks off on Friday (yes, the 13th) from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds from the sale go to benefit Grace’s youth programs by presenting items for sale to the community at fair prices, plus it encourages congregants to recycle their no-longer needed-but-in-good-condition items! (As always, we’re betting a Bake Sale will be part of the fun, too.) The church is located at 4427 Overland Avenue.
