Culver-Palms Targets Youth Fitness

October 22, 2009

Recent statistics show that the number of children who are overweight in America has tripled since 1980. According to a recent Obesity in America study this condition significantly increases the risk of a number of life-threatening conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and some types of cancer. OBA statistics also reflect a dramatic rise in the number of people – approximately 65% – who are now overweight. The data also shows that 31% of the population now suffers from obesity, compared with “only” 23% in 1994.

Looking for a way to turn these numbers around, the Culver-Palms Family YMCA has developed a youth fitness program for children 5-15 that is designed to avoid the potentially dangerous health problems childhood obesity may indicate.

The program, titled Fit Youth, has two divisions: Fit Kids and Fit Teens. Fit Kids classes, aimed at youth ages 5-12, are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5pm, with Fit Teens (ages 13-15) on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-5pm. Both of these programs include physical fitness and personal well-being, incorporating the Six Pillars of Character (trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship).

The Culver-Palms Family YMCA is keenly aware that budget-conscious school districts must keep their focus on academics, and is stepping to the plate to help keep local students healthy by providing them both play and physical exercise in a supervised, safe, and fun environment.

Call (310) 390-3604 for more information, or visit the Culver-Palms Family YMCA at 4500 So. Sepulveda Blvd., Culver City.
