So who knew?? That the “last Friday of the month” Kabbalat Shabat Shivah Service at Temple Akiba could be so filled with music, warmth, the wonderful (contributions of Rabbi Zachary Shapiro, Cantor Lonee Frailich and the “house band,”) noshes galore and, at the Friday, September 25 service, honors to long-time members Don and Joyce Perlick? It was the Perlick’s 50th wedding anniversary, and besides their Temple friends and neighbors, dozens of localites joined in for a warm and memorable tribute to the couple, engineered by daughter Lisa (Perlick) Pearlman. Congratulations go out to Don and Joyce!

It may be billed as a “new” program, but a lot of folks fondly remember the Culver-Palms Adventure Guides! Well, it’s back in action under new leadership and this terrific parent-child program, designed to strengthen family bonds and communication by sharing adventures of fun and learning, is better than ever. The Adventure Guides program is for children ages 5-9 and a parent, and runs from October through June, with monthly expedition events, e.g. weekend campouts, outdoor adventures, and service learning opportunities. For more information about Adventure Guides, please contact Megan McDuffie at meganmcduffie@ymcala.orgor 310-390-3604.

Who better to judge this year’s chili cook-off (always a key part of Grace Lutheran Church’s Annual Fall Festival) than Rick Hodges, proprietor of Tub’s Fine Chili, just a few blocks north of the church? Word has it that Rick will even feature the winning recipe as the “Miner’s Choice” menu item for a month at Tub’s. The Festival, set for this Sundayay 4 p.m., will also feature a Mac ‘n Cheese Contest (children will serve as judges on this one), and praise songs and skits will kick it off while the judges get a chance to sample the entries. The competition is kind-hearted but fierce, but best of all nobody leaves hungry, physically or spiritually! Grace Church is located at 4427 Overland Avenue. For more information, call (310) 559-1027.

This Sunday marks the Culver City Rotary Club’s Annual “10K” Brunch and Drawing, set to take place at Shanghai Red’s restaurant in Marina del Rey. At the time of last week’s meeting all the tickets had been sold, with kudos going to members Ernie Garza, Ed Little, and Ann Murakami who each sold over 20 tickets. Besides rewarding the winning ticket buyers, the Club’s split allows continued funding of the many community service projects Rotary oversees.

The Culver City Lions Club’s Annual Eye Screenings wrap up today, with the completion of screenings of students at our five elementary schools. One of the most rewarding community service projects this club undertakes, and most valuable to our youngest citizens, many previously undetected vision problems have been identified and recommendations provided for correction. Lion Elliot Heffler is taking signups for a fun(d)raiser, looking to get 20 or more Lions and guests together to see “Gary Unmarried” filmed from 5 p.m. to 10 at CBS Radford Studios in Studio City. They’ll be paid $18 per person, which goes to support Lions’ projects. Call Lion Elliot to sign up at (310) 384-2540.
