Each year, Culver City proclaims October as Disability Awareness Month in order to celebrate diversity and create awareness regarding people with disabilities. During the October 12 City Council meeting at 7 p.m., Mayor Andrew Weissman will make this proclamation and other Council Members will present award commendations to both individuals and organizations for outstanding service within the disability community.

Through a variety of community-based activities, the Senior & Social Services Division of the Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department and the City’s Disability Advisory Committee conduct Disability Awareness Month and year-round events to further its commitment to the advancement of independence, productivity, and inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of society.

A cornerstone event of the month will be the Seventh Annual Carnival for Children with Disabilities. Kids with disabilities—along with parents and siblings—are welcome to attend this free event on Sunday, October 25 at the Culver City Senior Center; however, RSVP is required.

Participants will enjoy free food and snacks, carnival games and prizes, arts and crafts, and entertainment. To register, please call (310) 253-6732. This event is made possible with the support of the Culver City’s Exchange Club, Girl Scouts, and Culver City Senior Citizens Association.

The month’s events will also include:

• A special free screening of the award-winning HBO documentary, Autism: The Musical at the Senior Center on Friday, October 16 at 7 p.m. The film is presented in conjunction with the Miracle Project organization, and members of the cast will be present.

• The annual wheelchair basketball exhibition game between the Fast Breakin’ Lakers and the Clippers Chairmen will take place at Culver City High on October 2 for invited students.

• The free monthly dance for developmentally disabled adults will take place at the Senior Center on Friday, October 9 from 7 p.m. to 9.

• A first-time essay contest for participating CCUSD middle and high school students will be ongoing throughout the month, as well as a coloring contest for ages 12 and younger. Prizes for the coloring and essay contests will be awarded at the Carnival for Children with Disabilities.

• The Saturday Socialites October event for adults with disabilities will feature food from Daphne’s Greek Cafe and live music by singer Rick Pearce. Cost of Socialites is $10 per person and requires an RSVP to attend from 6 p.m. to 8 on October 10.
